The ritual hand-bell or Ghanta represents the feminine principle of the "perfection of Wisdom" and is always held in the left hand. The bell is the mandala of Prajnaparamita, the Great Mother, from whom all reality comes forth. When the bell is rung it is said to "proclaim the sound of emptiness" to bring the mind into greater awareness. Its sound invites the deities and wards off obstructing forces. As a musical instrument, its sound can be an offering to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

The Ghanta symbol is also meditated on with the Dorje, representing both the masculine and feminine elements within us that we must balance in order to reach enlightenment.
